MOFA thanks Czech Senate for support

May 02, 2025
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warmly welcomes the Czech Senate’s recent passage of a resolution promoting Taiwan’s meaningful engagement in global organizations. (MOFA)
The Czech Senate’s April 29 passage of a resolution supporting Taiwan is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to the Senate, U.N. Resolution 2758 neither grants the People’s Republic of China sovereignty over Taiwan, nor does it make any mention of Taiwan’s status within the U.N. Additionally, the Senate pointed out that China’s deliberate distortion of the U.N. resolution violates international law and called on China to cease abusing it to serve political purposes.

The Senate’s resolution also backs Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the World Health Organization, U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, International Civil Aviation Organization and Interpol, as well as urging the Czech government to address China’s misinterpretation within the U.N. system and promote Taiwan’s meaningful engagement in U.N. agencies.

The Senate resolution followed one passed by the Czech Chamber of Deputies’ Foreign Affairs Committee in December last year, which objected to Beijing’s claim that Resolution 2758 provides a basis for its One China principle, demonstrating the Czech legislature’s staunch support of Taiwan, the MOFA added.

In response, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung sincerely thanked the Czech Senate for its substantive support and encouraged the international community to keep countering China’s misuse of Resolution 2758, the MOFA said, adding that Taiwan will continue to work with global democracies to jointly safeguard shared values.
